Also in Spanish: Un mes con María

For centuries the Catholic Church has set May aside as Mary's month, the month of crowned statues, flowers at her feet, and the Regina Caeli sung in the Easter light. A Month with Mary is a thirty-one-day companion for that month: a school of Marian prayer rooted in Scripture, in the Fathers and the saints, and in the settled teaching of the Church, which honors Mary as a mother who asks her Son for us and hands every grace back to him.

Each daily entry takes ten to fifteen minutes and is built the same way, in six parts:

  • A short verse from the Douay-Rheims Bible
  • Five paragraphs of reflection that open on a scene, a house in Nazareth, a field at Fátima, a parish church on a Saturday afternoon, and end on something to carry
  • A passage from the Fathers and the saints, quoted word for word from a named public-domain edition or from the Holy See: St. Irenaeus, Origen, St. Ephrem, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Leo the Great, St. Germanus of Constantinople, St. John Damascene, St. Bede, St. Bernard, St. Louis de Montfort, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Catherine Labouré, St. John Henry Newman, and the popes from Leo XIII to Benedict XVI
  • Three questions, each with a small next step
  • One concrete thing to do before bed, written down in the book itself
  • A closing prayer in plain, present-day English

The days go in order. Days 1 to 8 walk through Mary's life as the Gospels give it: the angel's greeting, her yes, the road to Elizabeth's house and the song she sang there, Bethlehem, Simeon's sword, the flight into Egypt, and the wedding at Cana. Days 9 to 12 take the four Marian dogmas, one each day: Mother of God, the Immaculate Conception, Ever-Virgin, and the Assumption. Days 13 to 18 go where she has appeared and to what she has left in people's hands: Fátima, her crowning as Queen of Heaven, Guadalupe, Lourdes, the Miraculous Medal, and the brown scapular of Mount Carmel. Days 19 to 21 take her prayers: the Rosary, the Memorare, and the Angelus with the Regina Caeli that replaces it in Eastertide. Days 22 to 27 take her humility, her faith, her help, her obedience, her pondering, and her place at the foot of the Cross. The last four days close the month with Mother of the Church, Refuge of Sinners, consecration to Jesus through Mary, and the Visitation on May 31, which sends the reader home carrying Christ.

Two small habits run through the month: one Hail Mary said slowly each day, and the Regina Caeli at noon. Every other day asks for one thing only, and it is always a thing you can finish tonight.

Every prayer the book asks for is printed in full at the back, among the Prayers for the Season: the Hail Mary, the Magnificat, the prayer of the Miraculous Medal, how to pray the Rosary with all twenty mysteries, the Hail, Holy Queen, the Memorare, the Regina Caeli, the Angelus, the Sub Tuum Praesidium, the Litany of Loreto, and St. Louis de Montfort's act of consecration. Nobody has to go looking.

The book opens with ten Tips for Prayer drawn from the practice of the saints and a plain How to Use This Devotional guide, so it serves lifelong Catholics and those returning or coming new to the practice equally well.
