Thirty days beside the Mother who stood at the Cross.
September belongs to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose feast falls on September 15, the day after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Every Christian sooner or later meets a cross that cannot be lifted: a child who walks away, a diagnosis, a grave. Mary has been there. A Month with Our Lady of Sorrows walks beside you through the whole of September, one quiet day at a time, so that by the end of the month you know how to stand where she stood, and you know you do not stand there alone.
A few unhurried minutes each day, and every day you will find:
- A short passage from Holy Scripture to carry with you
- A warm reflection that meets you in ordinary life
- The words of the Fathers, Doctors and saints of the Church
- Three gentle questions to bring to the Lord
- One small, concrete thing to do before bed
- A closing prayer in plain, prayerful English
This is a book to live with, not just to read, written for lifelong Catholics and for anyone just beginning. Each day ends with something simple and good to do: one stanza of the Stabat Mater copied out for the Fridays ahead, a handwritten letter to someone walking through a loss you have come through, a small bag packed for the person who asks for help at the corner, the date of your last confession written inside a small paper plank.
The month unfolds in five movements. The first week walks the Seven Sorrows of Mary, from Simeon's sword and the flight into Egypt to the road to Calvary, the Cross, the Pietà and the tomb. The second week keeps her birthday on September 8, sings the Stabat Mater, and celebrates the Exaltation of the Cross and her own feast. The third week learns from her how suffering can be offered, with the Korean Martyrs and St. Matthew. The fourth brings modern witnesses of the Cross, St. Padre Pio and St. Vincent de Paul. The last days keep the Archangels and St. Jerome, sending you into October with the Bible in your hands.
You will keep company with St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. John Henry Newman, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Jerome, and Pope St. John Paul II.
Everything the month asks you to pray is printed at the back, so you never have to go looking: the Stabat Mater, the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Memorare, and the Prayer to St. Michael. Start on any day; there is never any catching up.
If you are grieving right now, you do not have to read in order. Begin with the sorrow that sits closest to your own, the lost child, the long wait, the empty arms, and let the Mother who has been there keep you company.

Stabat Mater dolorosa. La Madre dolorosa estaba en pie.
