Also in Spanish: Un mes con san José

March belongs to St. Joseph. The Church has kept it that way for a long time, and the reason sits in the middle of the month: his Solemnity on March 19, with the Annunciation six days after it, and Lent running underneath most of it. A Month with St. Joseph is a thirty-one-day companion for that month: a quiet man walking beside you through a penitential season, which is exactly where he is most at home.

Each day takes ten to fifteen minutes and follows the same simple form:

  • A short Scripture passage from the Douay-Rheims Bible
  • A warm reflection that ends on something to carry
  • A passage from the Fathers, Doctors, and Popes of the Church, with its source: St. Felicity, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Jerome, St. Leo the Great, St. Patrick, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the Roman Breviary, St. Bernardine of Siena, St. Teresa of Ávila, St. Francis de Sales, Blessed Pius IX, Pope Leo XIII, the Second Vatican Council, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis
  • Three gentle questions for personal reflection
  • One concrete daily action you can finish before bed
  • A closing prayer in plain, present-day English

The month opens with the foundations: the just man, Joseph the son of David, and the annunciation made to him in his sleep. Then it walks his life: the carpenter's shop, the flight into Egypt, the hidden years at Nazareth, his silence, the finding in the Temple, and the Lenten road, with the Solemnity of St. Joseph at the center. The last third takes up his titles and his prayers: Patron of the Universal Church, Terror of Demons, Pillar of Families, the Annunciation of the Lord, the Litany, consecration to St. Joseph, Ite ad Joseph, the patron of a happy death, and the man who leads us home. The saints of March keep their own days along the way: St. Katharine Drexel, St. Casimir, Sts. Perpetua and Felicity, St. John of God, St. Frances of Rome, St. Patrick, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, and St. Turibius of Mogrovejo.

The daily actions are small and real: setting a small image of St. Joseph among the family photographs, mending one broken thing in the house, five minutes in the quietest room of the house with every screen off, a card that says Ite ad Joseph where the bills arrive, learning by heart the short prayer that closes the prayer for a happy death.

Every prayer the month asks for is printed at the back: the Litany of St. Joseph with the invocations added in 2021, the Angelus, the Memorare to St. Joseph, Pope Leo XIII's Prayer to St. Joseph, an Act of Entrustment, the Prayer for a Happy Death, St. Patrick's Breastplate, and the hymn said to have been found in St. Casimir's tomb. The book also opens with Tips for Prayer drawn from the saints and a short How to Use This Devotional, so it suits lifelong Catholics and those coming back or coming new.

Who it is for

  • Personal daily prayer in March and through Lent
  • Fathers, husbands, and any man looking for a model of quiet, faithful strength
  • Anyone who wants to take St. Joseph as a spiritual father, or is preparing a consecration to him
  • Workers, and those who are waiting for work
  • Parish groups, men's groups, and Lenten reading
  • Anyone who wants to be ready, in Joseph's way, for a happy death

"Go to Joseph: and do all that he shall say to you." (Genesis 41:55)

Spend this March in the house at Nazareth, with the man God trusted with his own Son. He fed Christ, protected Christ, taught Christ, raised Christ, and then quietly stepped aside. He will do the same for you.

Ite ad Joseph. Go to Joseph.

Id a José.
