Also in Spanish: Un mes con la Sagrada Eucaristía

April belongs to the Most Holy Eucharist. It is the month of the Easter mysteries, when the Church says most plainly that Christ is risen and still with us, and the abiding sign of that presence is the Blessed Sacrament of the altar. A Month with the Holy Eucharist is a thirty-day companion for the month: a school of Eucharistic faith, built on Scripture, on the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and on the saints who kept April.

Each day takes ten to fifteen minutes and follows the same simple form:

  • A short Scripture passage from the Douay-Rheims Bible
  • A warm reflection that ends on something to carry, not a list of things to do
  • A word from the Fathers, Doctors, and Popes of the Church, every one a real quotation from a named source: the Didache, St. Justin Martyr, St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Irenaeus, St. Melito of Sardis, St. Cyprian of Carthage, St. Ambrose, St. Hilary of Poitiers, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Cyril of Alexandria, Pope St. Gregory the Great, St. Anselm, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. John Vianney, Pope St. Pius X, Pope St. Paul VI, and Pope St. John Paul II
  • Three gentle questions for personal reflection
  • One concrete daily action you can finish before bed
  • A closing prayer

The month opens with the Bread of Life and the figures that prepared the world for this gift: Melchizedek the priest of bread and wine, the Passover lamb, the manna in the desert. Then it returns to the hard saying of John 6, where many walked away. The middle of the month walks the institution at the Last Supper, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Real Presence, transubstantiation, and the risen Lord known in the breaking of bread on the road to Emmaus. The last third takes up the Eucharistic life itself: worthy reception and the examination St. Paul asks for, spiritual communion for the days when Mass is out of reach, Eucharistic adoration, Benediction and the monstrance, the hymns St. Thomas Aquinas wrote for Corpus Christi, the Eucharistic miracles of Lanciano, Orvieto, and Siena, Mary the Woman of the Eucharist, and the Eucharist as the pledge of future glory and food for the last journey home. The saints of April keep their own days along the way: St. Isidore of Seville, St. Vincent Ferrer, St. John Baptist de la Salle, St. Stanislaus, Pope St. Martin I, St. Anselm, St. George, St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, St. Mark the Evangelist, St. Peter Chanel, St. Catherine of Siena, and Pope St. Pius V.

Every prayer the month asks for is printed at the back, so nobody has to go looking: an Act of Faith in the Real Presence, the Act of Spiritual Communion, the Anima Christi, an Act of Contrition, the Morning Offering, the Adoro Te Devote in Gerard Manley Hopkins's translation, the prayers of Benediction with the Divine Praises, the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, and the O Sacrum Convivium. The book also opens with Tips for Prayer drawn from the saints and a short How to Use This Devotional, so it suits lifelong Catholics and anyone returning to the practice after a long time away.

Written for:

  • Anyone who wants to believe in the Real Presence more deeply, or who finds it hard to believe at all
  • Readers who make a holy hour, and readers who have never made one
  • Those preparing for First Communion in the family, or returning to Communion after years away
  • The sick, the homebound, and anyone who cannot get to Mass as often as they would like
  • Parish adoration groups, Easter-season reading, and RCIA or OCIA companions

"I am the living bread which came down from heaven." (John 6:51)

Spend this April with the One who could not bear to leave us, who stayed under the form of bread, and who is waiting, tonight, in a tabernacle a few miles from where you are reading this.

O Sacrum Convivium. O sacred banquet, in which Christ is received.

También en inglés: A Month with the Holy Eucharist
