The Catholic Church has long kept February as the month of the Holy Family, the household God chose when he came into the world. A Month with the Holy Family is a twenty-nine-day companion for that month, and it does not retell the scenes at Nazareth. It looks the other way: from the Holy Family toward the family you actually have, with the difficult brother, the child who stopped coming to Mass, the parent whose memory is going, and the money that does not stretch.
Each daily entry takes ten to fifteen minutes and follows the same simple form:
- A short Scripture passage from the Douay-Rheims Bible
- A warm, pastoral reflection
- A passage from the Fathers, Doctors, Councils, and Popes of the Church, with its source
- Three questions for personal reflection, gentle enough to answer honestly
- One concrete daily action, most often involving another person in your house
- A closing prayer in plain, present-day English
Among the voices you will hear: St. Irenaeus of Lyons, St. Cyprian of Carthage, St. Gregory Nazianzen, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. John Chrysostom, St. Leo the Great, St. Benedict, St. Gregory the Great, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the Golden Legend, the Second Vatican Council, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis.
The month unfolds in four movements. The first week sets out the household God chose and the feasts that open the month: the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas, February 2), St. Blaise (February 3), the family you actually have, St. Agatha (February 5), St. Paul Miki and the Japanese Martyrs (February 6), and the family table. The second week walks the bonds themselves: St. Josephine Bakhita (February 8), husband and wife, St. Scholastica (February 10), Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick (February 11), fathers, mothers, and Sts. Cyril and Methodius (February 14). The third week goes where families are strained: children, grandparents and the elderly, the Seven Founders of the Servites (February 17), the one who has left the faith, forgiveness at close quarters, work and money, and St. Peter Damian (February 21). The fourth turns outward: the Chair of St. Peter (February 22), St. Polycarp (February 23), praying with people who will not, the open door, the family and the parish, the family dead, and the consecration of your home. A twenty-ninth day waits at the end for the leap year.
Every longer prayer the book asks you to pray, apart from the Rosary, is printed in it. A Prayers for the Season section at the back carries grace before and after meals, the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, the Angelus, the Anima Christi, a Consecration of the Family to the Holy Family, and the prayer for the family dead, so you are never sent looking elsewhere for words.
The book opens with a complete Tips for Prayer section drawn from the wisdom of the saints, and a clear How to Use This Devotional guide, making it equally suited to lifelong Catholics and to those returning or coming new to the practice.
