Also in Spanish: Un mes con el Santísimo Nombre de Jesús

For centuries the Catholic Church has set January aside for the Holy Name of Jesus. The year opens with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on January 1, when the Child is eight days old and receives his Name, and two days later the Church honors the Most Holy Name. A Month with the Holy Name of Jesus is a thirty-one-day companion for that month: a school of prayer for the Name above every name, rooted in Scripture, in the Fathers and the saints, and in the feasts of January.

Each daily entry takes ten to fifteen minutes and follows the same simple form:

  • A short verse from the Douay-Rheims Bible
  • A reflection that brings the day's feast or saint into your own week
  • A passage from the Fathers and the saints: the Letter to Diognetus, St. Athanasius, St. Basil, St. Gregory Nazianzen, St. Hilary, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Leo the Great, St. Gregory the Great, St. Anselm, St. Bernard, St. Angela Merici, St. Francis de Sales, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John Neumann, Tertullian, the Desert Fathers, the Second Vatican Council, and the popes from Leo XIII to Benedict XVI
  • Three questions, each with a small next step
  • One concrete thing to do before bed, often written down in the book itself
  • A closing prayer in plain, present-day English

The questions are gentle and safe to answer honestly, and the actions are small and real: writing the Name of Jesus at the top of a new calendar, keeping holy water by the door, writing a few lines for a girl in your family about a woman of faith she comes from, learning how the Name of Jesus is signed for the deaf, reading a chapter of St. Paul's letter to Titus aloud at home.

The days go in order. The first week walks the feasts that open the year: Mary, Mother of God, Sts. Basil and Gregory, the Most Holy Name, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John Neumann, the Epiphany, St. Raymond of Penyafort and the Baptism of the Lord. The second goes to the foundations: the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, the Bible, the Liturgy of the Hours, St. Hilary, the hidden years at Nazareth and the shape of a Catholic day. The third goes deeper into prayer: the Jesus Prayer, St. Anthony the Great, the Desert Fathers, Christian discipline, St. Sebastian and St. Agnes. The fourth carries the witness of late January: the Day of Prayer for the Unborn, St. Marianne Cope, St. Francis de Sales, the Conversion of St. Paul, and Sts. Timothy and Titus. The closing days bring St. Angela Merici, St. Thomas Aquinas, the life of the mind, the Christian family and St. John Bosco on January 31.

The longer prayers the book asks for is printed in full at the back, among the Prayers for the Season: the Litany of the Holy Name, the Anima Christi, the Morning Offering, the Angelus, Come, Holy Spirit, grace before and after meals, an Act of Contrition, the Salve Regina, and the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds.

The book opens with ten Tips for Prayer drawn from the practice of the saints and a plain How to Use This Devotional guide, so it serves lifelong Catholics and those returning or coming new to prayer equally well.

"As honey to the mouth, as melody in the ear, as a song of gladness to the heart, is the Name of Jesus." (St. Bernard of Clairvaux)

Begin the year where the Church begins it, with a Child who has been given a Name, and carry that Name into every hour of the months ahead.

Nomen Iesu super omne nomen. The Name of Jesus, above every name.

También en inglés: A Month with the Holy Name of Jesus

  • un pasaje de la Sagrada Escritura en la traducción de Torres Amat;
  • una reflexión pastoral cercana, escrita para leerse en diez o quince minutos;
  • una palabra de los Padres y Doctores de la Iglesia, tomada del texto castellano que la Iglesia misma reza;
  • tres preguntas para la reflexión personal, hechas para responderse con sinceridad;
  • una acción concreta que de verdad puede hacerse antes de que caiga la noche;
