Thirty-one days close to the Heart of your Mother.
August belongs to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with the Assumption shining at its center. Her Heart received the Word without reserve, kept it through joy and sorrow, and stood firm at the Cross. A Month with the Immaculate Heart walks beside you through the whole of August, one quiet day at a time, so that by the end of the month her Heart is a place you know your way to, and her Son is closer than when you began.
A few unhurried minutes each day, and every day you will find:
- A short passage from Holy Scripture to carry with you
- A warm reflection that meets you in ordinary life
- The words of the Fathers, Doctors and saints of the Church
- Three gentle questions to bring to the Lord
- One small, concrete thing to do before bed
- A closing prayer in plain, prayerful English
This is a book to live with, not just to read, written for lifelong Catholics and for anyone just beginning. Each day ends with something simple and good to do: Elizabeth's greeting said at a doorway in your home, three promises God has kept written down and read aloud, a dreaded chore taken off someone's hands, a letter to Mary dated and signed on the last night of the month.
The month unfolds in four movements. The first days look into Mary's Heart: full of grace, conceived without stain, saying yes to the angel, pondering, singing the Magnificat, and the Transfiguration. The second week walks her Seven Sorrows, from Simeon's prophecy to the tomb, and keeps the feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe, who gave his life for a stranger. The third week rejoices in the Assumption, her Queenship, Cana, Pentecost and the two Hearts. The last days go to Fatima and the Five First Saturdays, Marian consecration, St. Monica and St. Augustine, the Baptist, and Mary, Mother of Hope.
You will keep company with St. Augustine, St. Leo the Great, St. Basil, St. John Chrysostom, St. John Damascene, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Louis de Montfort, Pope Pius XII, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Sister Lucia of Fatima.
Everything the month asks you to pray is printed at the back, so you never have to go looking: the Magnificat, the Hail, Holy Queen, the Memorare, Come, Holy Spirit, and St. Louis de Montfort's Act of Consecration. Start on any day; there is never any catching up.
If you have long meant to make a Marian consecration, this is the month to begin. Day 26 shows you how to plan the thirty-three days of preparation so that they end on one of her feasts, and the whole Act of Consecration is waiting for you at the back of the book.
Who it is for
- Daily prayer through the month of August
- Anyone preparing for a Marian consecration
- Families who want to pray together before the school year
- Rosary groups, Legion of Mary praesidia and parish prayer groups
- Mothers and grandmothers praying, like St. Monica, for children who have wandered
- Anyone coming home to the Church who wants a gentle place to begin
- A thoughtful gift for a mother, a godchild, or a friend who needs a mother's care
"Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb." (Luke 1:42)
Come as you are. Her Heart is not waiting for a tidy soul; she is waiting for whoever walks in the door.
O Maria sine labe concepta. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us.

O Maria sine labe concepta.
