Thirty-one days with the price that was paid for you.

July belongs to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus. Every drop that fell in Gethsemane, at the pillar, under the thorns, and on the Cross was poured out for you, and it is offered still on every altar of the world. A Month with the Precious Blood walks beside you through the whole of July, one quiet day at a time, so that by the end of the month you know what you were bought with, and live like someone who has been bought.

A few unhurried minutes each day, and every day you will find:

  • A short passage from Holy Scripture to carry with you
  • A warm reflection that meets you in ordinary life
  • The words of the Fathers, Doctors and saints of the Church, who loved this Blood long before us
  • Three gentle questions to bring to the Lord
  • One small, concrete thing to do before bed
  • A closing prayer in plain, prayerful English

This is a book to live with, not just to read, written for lifelong Catholics and for anyone just beginning. Each day ends with something simple and good to do: a thank-you note to a godparent, a burden written down and offered at the next Mass, a visit put on the calendar, a confession finally planned. Little by little, the Blood that was poured out for you begins to show in how you live.

The month unfolds in four movements. The first week traces the Blood through the Old Covenant: Abel's blood crying from the ground, the Passover lamb, the covenant at Sinai, the life that is in the blood, and the Suffering Servant by whose bruises we are healed. The second week stands with Mary beneath the Cross: the agony in the garden, the scourging, the crown of thorns, the way of the Cross, the nails, the blood and water from his opened side, and the cup of the New Covenant. The third week shows the Blood at work in your own life: in Baptism and the Eucharist, in peace, holiness, redemption, and the mercy that cleanses from all sin. The fourth week keeps company with the saints of July, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Catherine of Siena, Sts. Joachim and Anne, St. Gaspar del Bufalo, and Sts. Martha, Mary and Lazarus, and ends on the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, sending you into August bought at a great price.

You will keep company with St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Justin Martyr, St. Leo the Great, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Bede the Venerable, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Ignatius of Loyola, Fr. Frederick Faber, and Pope St. John Paul II.

Everything the month asks you to pray is printed at the back, so you never have to go looking: the Litany of the Most Precious Blood, the Act of Spiritual Communion, the Morning Offering, and the Suscipe of St. Ignatius. Start on any day; there is never any catching up.

Sanguis Christi, lava me. Sangre de Cristo, lávame.
