Previously published as A Month with the Sacred Heart: A Catholic Devotional for June by Catholic Christ Bearer Ministries.
Spend thirty days close to the Heart that loved you first.
June belongs to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. For centuries Catholics have given this month to the Heart that was opened on the Cross, wept at Bethany, and waits for us in every tabernacle. A Month with the Sacred Heart walks beside you through the whole of June, one quiet day at a time, so that by the end of the month you know him better and love him more.
A few unhurried minutes each day, and every day you will find:
- A short passage from Holy Scripture to carry with you
- A warm reflection that meets you in ordinary life
- The words of the Fathers, Doctors and saints of the Church, who loved this Heart long before us
- Three gentle questions to bring to the Lord
- One small, concrete thing to do before bed
- A closing prayer in plain, prayerful English
This is a book to live with, not just to read. The reflections are warm without being sentimental and deep without being difficult. Each day ends with something simple and good to do: a note to someone who is grieving, a word of thanks spoken out loud, a First Friday written on the calendar. Little by little, those small acts make a heart more like his.
The month unfolds in four movements. The first week meets the Heart of Christ in the Gospels: the pierced side, the meek and humble Heart, the Good Shepherd, the tears at the grave of Lazarus, and the Beloved Disciple resting on his breast. The second week keeps watch with him in Gethsemane, under the crown of thorns, through his words from the Cross, and into the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the Risen Heart that still bears its wounds. The third week tells the story of St. Margaret Mary at Paray-le-Monial and the treasures that grew from it: the Twelve Promises, the nine First Fridays, the Holy Hour, consecration, and the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the home. The fourth week opens the Heart of mercy: the father running to meet the prodigal, the lost sheep carried home, the Birth of John the Baptist, the woman forgiven much, the Eucharistic Heart, the Litany, and the gift of reparation, before the month closes with Saints Peter and Paul and sends you out with a heart like his.
You will keep company with St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Gregory the Great, St. Ambrose, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, and the great Sacred Heart teaching of Pope Leo XIII, Pope Pius XI and Pope Pius XII.
Everything the month asks you to pray is printed at the back, so you never have to go looking: an Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart, the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and the Morning Offering. Start on any day; there is never any catching up.
