Thirty-three days to All Saints, and a novena for the holy souls.
A Season with the Communion of Saints is a thirty-three-day journey through the whole family of God. It begins on September 29, the feast of the archangels, and ends on November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints, when you renew the promises of your Baptism. A nine-day novena for the holy souls follows, from All Souls Day on November 2 through November 10.
The Church has always spoken of herself as one family in three places: the Church on earth, still struggling; the Church being purified after death, the souls in purgatory; and the Church in glory, the saints in heaven. The Creed names the bond between them: the communion of saints.
Four saints guide you, one each week. St. Thérèse of Lisieux teaches the call to holiness and the little way. St. Teresa of Ávila teaches the struggle of prayer. St. John Henry Newman, through The Dream of Gerontius, leads you through death and into purgatory. St. Ignatius of Antioch shows you the glory of the saints. The last five days gather everything together.
Each day takes fifteen to twenty minutes, and every day you will find:
- A passage of Scripture to read slowly
- The words of that week’s guide, in their own writings
- A reflection that draws Scripture, the saint and your own life together
- Three questions for reflection
- One small, concrete Daily Action
- The Daily Prayer, for the Church on earth, in purgatory, and in glory
Who it is for
- Anyone preparing for the Solemnity of All Saints and All Souls Day
- Catholics who want to pray for their own beloved dead
- Parish groups, with guidance for making the journey together
- Anyone who wants to understand why Catholics honor the saints and pray for the dead
