Most Christmas devotionals stop on December 25. This one begins there.

The light was lit at night in a stable, and almost no one on earth knew it was burning. Twelve days later, travelers who had followed a star arrived at the wrong palace, asked the wrong king, and still found their way to the child. A Season with the Light of the Nations walks with you through the forty days of Christmas, one day at a time, from the manger in Bethlehem to the candles of Candlemas on February 2.

These are the weeks when the decorations come down, the mornings stay dark, and the resolutions fade by mid-January. The Church fills exactly this stretch with a feast of light, and this book keeps you close to it. It is written for real life: for the day you are hosting family, driving home, back at work, or up with a newborn at three in the morning. Start on any day. Each entry belongs to its own date, so there is never any catching up.

A few quiet minutes each day, and every day you will find:

  • A passage from Holy Scripture to carry with you
  • A warm reflection that meets you in ordinary life
  • The words of the Fathers of the Church, who pondered these same mysteries long before us
  • Three gentle questions to bring to the Lord
  • One small thing to do before bed
  • A closing prayer

This is a book to live with, not just to read. The reflections are warm without being sentimental and thoughtful without being difficult, written for the lifelong Catholic, the new convert still learning when to kneel, and anyone coming home after years away. Each day ends with something small and good to do: a note to a child, a blessing spoken over someone you love, a kindness to a person working the night shift. Little by little, those small acts carry the light of Christmas into ordinary days.

You will keep company with St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Leo the Great, St. Ephrem the Syrian, St. Gregory Nazianzen, St. Ambrose and others, voices that have lit the way for Christians for sixteen centuries.

The first twelve days stay at the manger: shepherds sent back to their night shift with joy, a martyr whose face shone the day after the birth, the disciple who stooped at the tomb and believed, a family tree with foreigners already in it. Then comes the star, and the wise men who knelt where the scholars stayed home. Then the Jordan, where the heavens open over Jesus and you remember your own baptism; the wedding at Cana, where the best wine was kept until last; the fishermen who let down their nets one more time. The book ends in the Temple, where an old man takes the child in his arms and says out loud what the light is for.

It ends at Candlemas and walks you to the door of Lent. The prayers the book asks of you are printed at the back: the blessing of a home at Epiphany with chalk over the door, the proclamation of the date of Easter, the Canticle of Simeon, a blessing of candles for Candlemas, and a prayer of the Magi.

Who it is for

  • Daily prayer from Christmas Day, through the twelve days of Christmas and Epiphany, into February
  • Families reading together at the supper table, with two simple household customs to keep
  • A Christmas gift that is opened and used the very same day
  • Parish prayer groups, OCIA and confirmation classes
  • New Catholics keeping their first Christmas in the Church
  • Anyone coming home to the Church who wants a place to begin

"Arise, be enlightened, O Jerusalem: for thy light is come." (Isaiah 60:1)

Kneel at the manger, walk out with the wise men, and let the season do its slow work, so that when Lent comes you are already carrying the light.
