Light one candle at a time, and let Advent be what it was meant to be: a season of waiting for Someone.

Advent belongs to the waiting. From the First Sunday to Christmas Eve the Church stops telling you what has happened and begins telling you what is coming, and she does it with the lamps lit and the door watched. A Season with the Promise of the Lord keeps those days with you the way the Church keeps them, one at a time, while the rest of the world rushes ahead to December 25.

Every day is built on the readings the Church proclaims at Mass that same day, so the book prays alongside your parish rather than beside it. Isaiah and the Gospel stand side by side, as the Church sets them, and each reflection goes to the place where the promise and its fulfillment meet.

What you will find each day

A few quiet minutes each day, and every day you will find:

  • A passage from that day’s Scripture to carry with you
  • A warm reflection that meets you in the busiest weeks of the year
  • The words of the Fathers of the Church, who waited for Christmas long before us
  • Three gentle questions to bring to the Lord
  • One small thing to do before bed
  • A closing prayer

You will keep company with St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. Gregory the Great, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Irenaeus, St. Cyril of Jerusalem and others, voices that have kept Advent with Christians for sixteen centuries.

How the season unfolds

The first three weeks walk the four Sundays and their weekdays: the command to stay awake, the mountain all nations climb, the centurion at Capernaum, the desert that blossoms, the friends who lower a man through a roof, the voice crying in the wilderness, and the reed that does not bend. The final week, December 17 to 24, is the week of the O Antiphons, the Church’s ancient cries from O Wisdom to O Emmanuel, and it closes on Christmas Eve. A Closing Word waits for you on Christmas morning.

The prayers the book asks of you are printed in it: the Magnificat, the Benedictus, the Angelus, all seven O Antiphons, the Rorate caeli, and a blessing of the Advent wreath for your home.

Who it is for

  • Daily prayer through the whole of Advent
  • Families praying together around the Advent wreath or the supper table
  • Catholics who want to pray with the daily Mass readings
  • Parish Advent programs, prayer groups, and OCIA classes
  • A thoughtful gift to give at Thanksgiving or the start of Advent
  • Anyone coming home to the Church who wants a place to begin

Questions

Advent is a different length every year. Will the book fit this year?
Yes. The book carries twenty-nine entries so it is never too short, and a simple note tells you where to turn when December 17 arrives. The Sunday entries name the Gospel for every year of the cycle, so the book serves you year after year.

Does it follow the Mass readings?
Every day is built on the readings the Church proclaims at Mass that same day, so you pray in step with your parish.

Which Bible translation does it use?
Scripture is quoted from the Douay-Rheims (Challoner revision), unchanged.

What should I read after Christmas?
Continue with the companion volume for the forty days of Christmas, A Season with the Light of the Nations, which runs from Christmas to Candlemas on February 2.

También en inglés: A Season with the Promise of the Lord

«Ciertamente yo vengo luego. Así sea. ¡Ven, oh Señor Jesús!» (Apocalipsis 22, 20)
