Short chapters on love from a saint who gave his tongue and his right hand for the truth about Christ.

Most of us know the same old struggles by heart: the anger that flares at the same person, the judgment that forms before we have said a word, the worry about money or about what others think of us. St. Maximus the Confessor wrote for people exactly like that. He knew the soul is rarely lost all at once. It is lost through the passions we excuse one day after another. And he knew the way out. The Ascetic Life and The Four Centuries on Love puts that way into your hands, a few lines at a time, so that little by little love can take the place where resentment used to live.

Open it for a few unhurried minutes, and you will find:

  • A heartfelt conversation between a young monk close to giving up and the old man who will not let him
  • Four "centuries" of short sayings on love, each one brief enough to carry with you through the day
  • Plain, practical wisdom on anger, judging others, food, money, reputation and prayer
  • A clear introduction to the life of St. Maximus and the shape of his teaching
  • A glossary of the key words of the spiritual life and a full Scripture index

This is a book to live with, not just to read. Each chapter takes a minute to read and can take a week to pray. Many readers keep it by the bed or in the chapel and read one chapter, then sit with it. One evening it is the test of whether you love someone or merely tolerate him. Another it is the reminder that the person who wronged you is not your enemy at all; the passion is. Another it is the gentle discovery that a grudge you have carried for years can be laid down tonight.

The book unfolds in two parts. The Ascetic Life begins with a young monk's question, "Why did God become man?", and the elder answers by walking him back through the whole Christian life: the one commandment of love that holds all the others, Christ's way of overcoming His enemies by loving them, watchfulness, self-control and prayer, and at last a cry of repentance you can make your own. The Four Centuries on Love then trace a single ladder. Faith gives rise to the fear of God; fear makes self-control possible; self-control quiets the passions and sets the heart free for love; and love opens onto the knowledge of God and, at last, onto union with Him.

Behind St. Maximus you will hear the great teachers he loved, St. Gregory of Nazianzus and St. Dionysius among them, and above all the Scriptures: the Psalms, the prophets, the Gospels and St. Paul, quoted on nearly every page.

You can begin anywhere. Open to any chapter of the Centuries and it will speak on its own; there is never any catching up.

If you are carrying a hurt you cannot seem to forgive, start with the Fourth Century. Its pages on friendship and reconciliation were written for exactly that, and they ask nothing of you but the next small step.

Who it is for

  • Daily spiritual reading, a few lines at a time
  • Anyone who struggles with anger, resentment or judging others
  • A holy hour, a retreat, or the quiet minutes before Mass
  • Catholics who want to meet the Fathers of the Church in plain, modern English
  • Parish study groups, together with the companion Catholic study guide
  • A thoughtful gift for a priest, a religious, or a friend who prays

"God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him." (1 John 4:16)

Come as you are. Maximus will tell you that the passions you excuse are the bars of your own cell. He will also tell you that the door is open.

Deus caritas est. God is love.

También en inglés: The Ascetic Life
