Thirteen homilies on the Our Father and the Beatitudes, from one of the great Fathers of the Church.
You have prayed the Our Father thousands of times. Perhaps it has grown so familiar that the words slip past before you have meant them. St. Gregory of Nyssa knew that danger well. In thirteen homilies preached to his own people in the fourth century, he takes the prayer Jesus taught us and the Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount and opens them line by line, until the words you thought you knew begin to change the way you pray and the way you live. The Path to God lets you sit in his congregation and listen.
Read one homily at a sitting, and you will find:
- Five homilies on the Lord's Prayer, from the courage to call God "Father" to the plea to be delivered from the evil one
- Eight homilies on the Beatitudes, climbing from poverty of spirit to the joy promised to the persecuted
- A warm, searching preacher who speaks plainly about money, pride, grief and forgiveness
- A clear introduction to the life and teaching of St. Gregory
- A Scripture index and a short bibliography for further reading
This is a book to live with, not just to read. Gregory is a physician of the soul. He names what pulls us away from God, the anxiety about money, the craving for approval, the resentment we carry against those who have hurt us, and then points the way back, one petition and one Beatitude at a time. Asking for daily bread becomes a lesson in trust: ask for today, and leave tomorrow with God. Forgiving others becomes the measure by which we dare to ask God to forgive us.
The book unfolds in two movements. The Lord's Prayer homilies begin with why we pray at all, then walk through each petition: God's name made holy, His kingdom come, His will done on earth as in heaven, our daily bread, our debts forgiven, and our rescue from evil. Along the way you will meet the ancient form of the prayer that Gregory himself prayed: "May Your Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us." The Beatitudes homilies then climb a ladder, rung by rung: the poor in spirit, the meek, those who mourn, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart who shall see God, the peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness' sake.
You will sit at the feet of St. Gregory of Nyssa, brother of St. Basil the Great and St. Macrina, one of the three Cappadocian Fathers whose teaching shaped the Creed we profess at every Sunday Mass. Through him you will hear Moses and the Psalms, the prophets and St. Paul, woven into every page.
Each homily stands on its own. Begin with the petition or the Beatitude that speaks most to your life right now; there is never any catching up.
If you are finding it hard to forgive, start with the fifth homily on the Lord's Prayer. Gregory will not make it sound easy, but he will show you why it is possible.
